With spring arriving, undesirable seed heads also begin on North Course greens. The greens on the North are a mix of two grass varieties bentgrass and Poa Annua. Bentgrass does not seed itself at such low heights although Poa does.

To minimize disruption of ball roll we apply chemicals that minimize the seeding process. While at the same time we remove the seed heads with frequent standard mowing and occasional vertical mowing. We use a vertical mower with “Poa Buster” blades on it. These blades are perpendicular to the putting surface and help stand up the grass and harvest some of the seed heads.
